Looking to the Future - a letter from Artistic Director Hector Armienta

July 09, 2020

Hector Armienta

Opera Cultura's 2019-20 season got off to a great start with the first workshop presentation of my new opera Zorro. Both December performances were well attended and we received so much positive feedback on the work. But with the start of 2020, we began to face one challenge after another, starting with the new AB5 legislation and ending with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, Opera Cultura is looking to the future with great optimism, thanks to our donors and funders who have supported us during this turmoil. We have all been impacted by the pandemic in one way or another, so we are immensely grateful to all who have continued to support us through challenging times.

We are envisioning our 2020-2021 season as a year of experimentation and innovation. Our plans for an exciting new project are now well underway, and we will be sharing all the details with you by mid-August. We will be working to incorporate technology into our programming and to provide more digital content while still staying true to our mission—presenting performances that touch on issues relevant to the Latinx cultural experience.

As we look to 2021-22, we anticipate that we will be doing a full production of my new opera Zorro. We will be using the lessons learned this year to make us a stronger organization in the years to come, with a larger impact locally, regionally and nationally. Thank you for joining Opera Cultura on this journey, and please stay connected as we move into a new future together.

Warmest Regards,

Héctor Armienta
General/Artistic Director
