Latinx Artists Here and Now: Nicolas Lell Benavides bio

Nicolas Lell Benavides’ music has been praised for finding “…a way to sketch complete characters in swift sure lines…” (Washington Post) and cooking up a “jaunty score [with] touches of cabaret, musical theater and Latin dance.” (OPERA NEWS). He has worked with groups such as the Washington National Opera, The Glimmgerglass Festival, West Edge Opera, Nashville Opera, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, and Friction Quartet. He was a fellow at the Eighth Blackbird Creative Lab and the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music. Last summer, Nick was the first ever Young Artist Composer in Residence at The Glimmerglass Festival.
His opera in conjunction with librettist Marella Martin Koch, Pepito, premiered with Washington National Opera. This 20-minute opera is available for purchase at: nickbenavides.bandcamp.com/album/pepito.
Upcoming premieres include a new ballet for The Glimmerglass Festival in 2021, a song cycle called Canto Caló with New Moon Duo, and scene of his and Marella’s opera Gilberto with West Edge Opera. He and Marella will premiere a new work, Tres Minutos, with Music of Remembrance in 2021.
Nick has studied at Santa Clara University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.
