Changing Lives Through Youth Musical Theater

July 18, 2013

This year's Opera Cultura Summer Conservatory Program was one of the best we have had ever. Under the auspices of the School of Arts and Culture @ MHP,   middle and high school students received training in singing, acting and dancing over a 2 week period.
What was particularly gratifying was to see young people from different socio economic levels and cultural backgrounds come together to study musical theater.  There were students in this year's  program that have been with us each summer since 2011 but we also had many new students this year. Some of them had never participated in a summer arts program, let alone a musical theater program. They had never worn a costume, danced a musical number, or acted in a scene. Through scholarships provided by the School of Arts and Culture and Friends of Opera Cultura, no student was turned away due to financial circumstances. Our hope is that some of them will go on to be professional artists. More importantly, we hope they will apply the  discipline and focus they learned in being an artist to other goals in education.
