CANCELLATION of Frida and Rap Opera 2.0

March 23, 2020

Frida and Rap Opera Cancelled

After much deliberation, and with great reluctance and sadness, Opera Cultura has decided we must cancel our productions of Frida (May 8-10) and the Rap Opera Project 2.0 (June 6-7) due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak. We hope to reschedule the productions in the future, and will have more information in the coming months.

Our decision is based on the current orders and guidance from the County of Santa Clara, the California Department of Public Health, and the CDC, particularly the most recent statement from the CDC that gatherings of 50 people or more should be cancelled for the next eight weeks.
We have also taken into consideration the continuing increase in cases in Santa Clara County; and the prediction that circumstances are not likely to improve in the coming weeks, or even months. As the New York Times reported last week, “If we are relying on social or physical distancing to slow down infection, the prevailing optimistic guess among experts on when the virus will abate is about two months.” We feel it is our duty to do everything in our power to slow the spread of the virus and to protect the most vulnerable in our community.
If you are a ticket holder, you should have received a message through Brown Paper Tickets regarding refunds. Please consider donating your ticket purchase to help Opera Cultura through this crisis. To donate your tickets, no action is needed.
We will also be starting a new fundraiser for our artists, many of whom have lost most or all of their work. More information coming soon.
Finally, we are offering a free stream of Opera Cultura’s 2014 production of Hector Armienta’s song cycle opera Cuentos de Peregrinacion/Tales of Pilgrimage, based on true stories collected from immigrants in our community. The production was directed by Kinan Valdez and conducted by Temirzhan Yerzhanov at the Mexican Heritage Theater—School of Arts and Culture. Click here to watch. You can also find free streams of performances from the Metropolitan Opera and many other organizations online. We hope this will bring you some comfort; and our hearts are with you through all of this.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at info@operacultura.org. You can also leave us a voicemail at 408-471-7853 and we will return your call as soon as we are able.
Sending you wishes for good health,
