Announcing Literacy Through Opera and Great New Works!
September 28, 2016
Season 2016-2017 kicks off our Literacy Through Opera initiative! Over the next two years, Opera Cultura will use the art form of opera to promote reading and writing.
We will be producing my bilingual children's opera, Los Coyotes y Las Conejas (Coyotes and Rabbits), in March 2017. The story is based on an old Mexican folktale about the value of education and literacy. It is no coincidence that March is National Literacy Month. We are thrilled at the opportunity to bring this work to low-income schools in San Jose through our Arts in Education program, and to families through our free ticket program.
This season also brings a reading of new excerpts from my opera Bless Me Ultima, based on the epic novel of the same title by Rudolfo Anaya. In preparation for the reading, we will host a series of of Youth Writing Workshops in which Mr.Armienta will work with young aspiring playwrights to explore musical composition and the themes of family throughout the novel. This is part of our ongoing mission to foster next generation artists from communities of color.
